A huge congratulations to 3 gentleman who were recognized at the club’s recent AGM for years of service.

Doug Sommerfied was a committee member in 1992 and 1993. He has been the "greens" director in the days when the greens were grass. For about 12 years Doug was instrumental in the organizing and running of the Bowls played at North Mackay Bowls Club.

Artie Williams was a committee member from 1997 through to 2009. A lot of his time spent on the board was as games controller, selector and he was always involved in bowls subcommittees. He was Jr Vice President in 1999, 2004 and 2005. Always a willing helper for anything that needed to be done around the Club.

John Ryan was a committee member from 1988 through to 2013. This man always has this Club at heart and has done so much for it. He was Jr Vice President in 1991, Senior Vice President in 1993 and 2000, President in 1994 and 1995. He had a five year break away from the board before taking on the role of Jr Vice President in 2011, 2012 and 2013. As he knows a bit about timber and building, he was always on the building committee.

Goosies Bowls 19th Sept
The big news this week was the Past President’s Day last Monday, held at North Mackay Bowls Club. It was a men versus ladies day with thirty teams of four, with 15 rinks in play: an excellent turnout. Although plain white shirts and pants has been the usual dress, many teams turned up in club colours, making for a very colourful scene. Nibblies were supplied after the game. This time the men defeated the ladies, but it was a very hard-fought contest.
Top prize winners were Rob Mybray, Don Prosser, Rob Evans and Joe Oliver. In second place was the team of Maurie Pearson, Wayne Mietzel, Tony Allsop and Paul Goldston.
Friday bowls re-commences on 1st October with a new format. It will be a pairs game of 18 ends, with prizes drawn for both winners and losers, and includes a kitty toucher. You could win up to $1,300.

Goosies bowls results 29th August
The last of North Mackay Bowls Club championships were played on Sunday with the mixed pairs final between John Kennell and Lorraine Silman who played Dave McKendry and Daphne Offield. The spectators were treated to some good bowls played by both teams, but probably the difference was in Lorraine’s drives, which often took shot from Dave and Daphne. Lorraine and John won by 28-12. Lorraine and Bert Hobbs were runners up last year, but this year Lorraine and John have won the title.

It is good to see the next generation of bowlers being coached by head coach, Felix Purcell, and Ian Beveridge through the school’s programme at Goosies. Both boys and girls appeared to take a keen interest. The club has several up and coming new and younger players who will be putting their name down for pennants and other club competitions next year, which is very good for both our club and bowls in general.

Goosies Bowls News 15th Aug.
Last Sunday there were two Goosies club championship titles decided.
First was the final of the Senior (over 60) Men’s Singles. This was won by Tony Allsop who played Bill McCurry. The game was exciting, as several times when Tony was holding shots, Bill took out the lead bowl with an up shot. Tony kept up the pressure however, finally winning by 25-11.
The other title was the club Mixed Fours. The competing teams were Kees Struik, John Priest, Val DePinto and Marie Bragg against Ron Bowers, Dave McKendry, Lorna Bowers and Chrissy Hall. This was also a good game. In the end, Kees Struik’s team was too good for Ron Bowers’, winning by 26-9.
These games were the only ones played on Sunday, and were on alternating greens, so the spectators could keep an eye on both. John Chester-Master was the umpire, as well as marker for the Allsop/McCurry game. Thank you, John: all the time you spend at the club is very much appreciated.

Goosies bowls report 1st August
Last Saturday we held a send- off for well- known bowling member, Ken Wedel who is going to reside in Emu Park. Ken and Pat are going to live near their daughter who has a large property there. Ken will still play bowls, but at this stage is not sure if he will join Emu Park or Yeppoon club.
Ken started off the St. Lawrence club and was their president for several years. When he came to North Mackay Bowls club in 2004, he became a member of the committee. He has won several championships, the latest being the two bowl triples club championships this year.
The day was a great success with 10 rinks filled. In first place was a triple of Ron Bowers, Albert Graves and Neil Blucher, with Vic Gaudion and Peter Horsburgh filling second place. Ken shouted everyone drinks at the end of the day.
